Why Join the Challenge?
It’s never too late to start incorporating SPF into a routine each day! Sun damage is cumulative, with only about 23% of lifetime exposure occurring by age 18, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation 4.
Using a product with SPF every day is one of the easiest, yet most important ways to keep skin healthy, but it is often overlooked as a regular step in a skincare routine. Protecting skin from UV exposure is important every day, not just during summer months or when spending prolonged periods of time outside in direct sunlight. That’s because sun damage can even happen when you are inside on a sunny day or during cloudy days outdoors. So using a moisturizer with SPF like CeraVe AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion can help protect the skin from these daily exposures. To better understand the importance of this daily skincare step, it’s helpful to know what happens to your skin during UV exposure.
Why SPF is a Skincare Essential
What is UV Exposure?
Daily exposure to UV rays can have both short-term and long-term effects on the skin, from sunburn and premature aging to an increased risk of skin cancer. There are two kinds of rays the skin needs protection from: UVA and UVB, often called UV “Aging” and UV “Burning” rays, to help understand the difference. Both UVA and UVB rays don’t just impact skin on a sunny day, as they can come through clouds. In fact, UV rays can often be stronger on a cloudy day than on a sunny day, so it’s always important to wear SPF when outside, especially on areas of skin more prone to exposure, like the face, neck, and hands. But rays don’t just come through clouds – UVA rays can also come through glass, so it’s important to make sure you’re wearing SPF if you’re near a window, like while driving or when sitting near a window at work or school or in a restaurant. Small changes that are simple to implement every day can help keep skin healthier in the long term.
Sun Damage and the Skin Barrier
Sun exposure harms the skin barrier, which is the outermost protective layer of your skin. A healthy skin barrier helps keep skin hydrated by locking in moisture and healthy by blocking out irritants.
A critical component of the skin barrier is ceramides, which are lipids that help keep the skin barrier intact. Ceramides are naturally found in skin but can deplete overtime, with UV exposure increasing the rate of depletion. A clinical study commissioned by L’Oréal and released in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology 3 found that daily sun exposure not only damages skin cells, but also significantly reduces the level of ceramide 3 in the skin and impairs the quality of essential ceramides 1, 3 and 6-II in the skin barrier2.
CeraVe AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion with SPF 30 is a broad-spectrum sunscreen that is enriched with ceramides 1, 3 and 6-II to help replenish the skin barrier and hydrate skin, while simultaneously protecting from UVA and UVB rays.
UV Exposure and the Risk of Skin Cancer
In addition to keeping the skin barrier healthy, regular use of a product with SPF can also help decrease the risk of skin cancer. According to the Melanoma Research Alliance3, over 90% of all skin cancer is caused by exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun or indoor tanning devices. Melanoma, which is the deadliest type of skin cancer, is the fifth most common cancer in the United States, and forms when melanocytes, the pigment-producing cells in the skin, start to grow out of control.
According to the Skin Cancer Foundation4, regular daily use of SPF 15 or higher reduces the risk of developing melanoma by 50%, and people who use SPF 15 or higher daily show 24% less skin aging than those who do not use sunscreen daily.
